My 2012 6 speed clunks much louder than my old 2003 5 speed but I don't mind since I get better overall mileage and it's worth it for the reduced rpm during riding.
Some more than others, yada, yada. C'mon. It's a Harley.
My Goldwing doesn't do that.....it's a Honda.
Get used to it, or buy a different bike.
I love my new Road King more then any bike I have ever owned. Buy a different bike, NO WAY.
Thanks to all the rest of you, very informative. From what I understand looks like that loud clunk is from both the trany and the primary.
As for that Polaris video it must be older then the 11 models, one of the guys in my group has a 11 and a 05 and the new one clunks and makes odd motor noses. I told him sounds like they put a Harley motor in it, we both lol.
If you're concerned about scaring children and small animals off with the Obligatory Loud Harley First Gear Clunk, one workaround is to put it in first before starting and start with the clutch in. Problem solved As for the hunt for neutral, don't look for it until after you shut it down, it's a lot easier to find then
Last 3 H-Ds have clunked pretty loudly going into 1st. Much louder than previous metric bikes. And all 3 H-Ds have had a difficult time finding neutral. I've found that the best way is start from 1st and lightly bump the heel shifter - it almost always finds neutral. If I don't use the heel shifter, I pass it every time.
Went out for a ride tonight and the heel trick worked like a charm. Just a light tap and it goes right in neutral. Thanks man, great tip!!
Real easy way to decide this battle. Park 100 Victories in a parking lot with 100 Harleys. Bring in 100 women from their 20's and up. 90% will gravitate to the Harleys. THAT is the "acid" test
I havta call BS on the Victory video. My Shovel has clunked in all gears since 1979 new. I put a belt drive in the primary at 20 miles on the OD. I like the alternator idea at victory but there are no electronics in the primary as stated. There is a winding and magnets electronics are in the regulator outside the primary.
I was having all of the same problems listed above, hard to find first, clunking. Then I tried Bel-ray80W140 in the trans and Red Line Primary Case oil. No more clunk, no more missing first gear. Silky smooth shifts. Used this combo in my 03 Softail with the same results.
