So I got to ask, where dose the loud clunk shifting from neutral to first come from?.
My 11 King has always been very loud more then any Harley I've had. I have been told it comes from the trany but I just got done checking it out and it seems to come from the primary at the clutch end.
I did call my dealer about it but he said they all do it and some are louder then others. I already knew that, but of the 11 Harleys I ride with I win for the loudest.
I have adjusted my clutch to several different engagements but the clunk never changes. I did put Red Line shock prof in the transmission and that did cut down on gear wine but did nothing to quiet down the clunk.
Mine makes a racket going to first and then the rest of the gear changes are loud too. Weird part is my 2011 Wide Glide had the exact same clunk. I guess I have gotten used to it. What I am still not used to is the battle to get in neutral. It takes me 4-5 tries. I go past it every time. I never had this problem with my BMW K1200S but both Harleys have been tough. Not sure why.
Mine stopped the clunk, got so quiet going into first that I found myself stepping on the shifter several times to make sure it was in first. Then, needed new clutch plates. Don't know if it is related but maybe the clunk is a good thing.
Sounds like clutch freeplay needs to be adjusted. Granted, my Yamaha Sportbike does that into first regardless of how much I adjust it. Irritating isn't it?
Last 3 H-Ds have clunked pretty loudly going into 1st. Much louder than previous metric bikes. And all 3 H-Ds have had a difficult time finding neutral. I've found that the best way is start from 1st and lightly bump the heel shifter - it almost always finds neutral. If I don't use the heel shifter, I pass it every time.
My '05 Heritage has the same "clunk" especially after it has been sitting for a few days. My '09 Deluxe and '11 Ultra Classic don't have the same "clunk". Never had any other problems with the Heritage. SJ Ron
I have found that just after doing a cold start, if I don't wait for the rpms to drop to normal idle it will clunk pretty good if I drop it into first but only that one time. Guess I've been lucky
On a cold start I usually hold the clutch in for about 20 seconds before I shift into gear. I think it allows a little primary fluid to get in between the clutch plates. Seems to help but still clunks.
