Jeff & Jpooch... Really???? Is it that important to talk **** back and forth. Jpooch clearly said "end of rant", and I think he was just looking to blow off some steam. I agree with both of you, Jpooch, dude we do expect sales people to know about the latest and greatest. I am one (not HD but flames expected), and spend more time than I would like learning about the new stuff.
And Jeff, completely agree we are all human and we all deserve way more of a break than we seem to get these days. Most of us try as hard as we can and still make mistakes. But you gotta give Jpooch a little credit, he could have blown up in the dealership, made a big deal of it, asked to talk to the manager, etc., etc. But he didn't. He chose to just do a little rant.
And I (or at least the salesman in me) am ok with that.
OP--->I spent over 15 years working at dealerships and I've got a question for you: What rock did you crawl out from under and who was president when ya got knocked the F*ck out? (Please don't be a smartass and tell me that was two questions...hear me out...) The Customer ALWAYS knows more than the salesmen!!! ALWAYS!!! Most of the training they get is from the customers. For example, he now knows about the tubeless wire wheels b/c of you. We are all gear-heads, we live and breathe this stuff, analyze and study this stuff, and that's even b4 we get serious and think about buying something. Salesmen rarely are gear-heads. They are salesmen and they don't much care if they are selling a bike, a car, a TV, or washer and dryers. If you ever meet a salesman that knows more than you THAT is when you post on a forum b/c he is the exception to the rule. 'Course you'd run the risk of a forum member calling you a dumba$$ for knowing less than a brain-dead salesman.
This is an extremely good point. Salesman are puppets. Back and forth to the sales manager. If they are bad enough though, reeeeally need a sale, and whine enough to the sales manager, you may end up with that great deal from the dumbass salesman.
Damn, I'm happy for you that you've never made a mistake before!! Do you realize how many different models there are, and how many options there are for each model, and that all changes when you start talking about different years? But I'm sure you've never, EVER made a mistake on your job before.
Guaranteed if any of us lived these bikes full time as a salesman you would know the finish of every nut and washer on every model. Knowing the major options is a no brainer.

You know, another point to be made is that the salesman the OP's ranted about should have done what we Soldiers (I'm Guard) are reminded to do whenever a VIP, ie, Command Sergeant Major (BN/BDE/State CSM/Regimental CSM/Bureau CSM (Reserves/National Guard) or Sergeant Major of the Army), Directorate Chief/BDE Commander (usually a COL), General Officer or an Elected Official is coming around to talk to us: don't bullshit- if you don't know the answer when you're asked a question, simply (and respectfully) state "Sergeant Major/Sir, I don't know the answer to that. But I WILL find that out."
Don't insist you're right or fully informed simply because of your position, especially if there is evidence that you may, in fact, be mistaken or under-informed. Standing your ground or lying to sound good just causes you to lose SOMETHING...a sale, respect or in extreme cases, a stripe or even your job. (And yes, I've heard of dudes getting busted because they outright lied to a General Officer to cover up a lack of preparedness).
Maybe it's just the Military way...but it goes pretty far in the real world too. Nobody can be expected to be completely and utterly informed about ALL aspects of every model of every bike Harley CURRENTLY makes, HAS made and WILL BE making, but if you don't know, don't spout garbage just to give an answer then swear it's gospel truth. I would think everyone on this forum would be understanding enough to accept (and would RATHER hear) "You know, I honestly don't know about those wheels yet. Let me dig into that and I'll get you an answer", rather than "No, they don't make such a thing. I'm sure of it", wouldn't you agree?
