I just replaced mine and took me about a half hour. I used the 2x4 trick and lost a few teaspoons when the cover was popped off. Mind you my bike hasn't been run in over a month since I'm waiting on heads so all of the fluid was in the case. I also agree with others definitely screw the cable into the cover first. Its a PITA too, feels like its cross threaded.

I should have taken a picture before but I'm wondering if its run properly. The manual says to route it between the engine guard and frame rail but it doesn't look right to me (but it probably is).

I can't believe the difference in clutch feel though. Much nicer.

reviving old thread for assistance... I have a small leak coming from the housing where cable goes into the tranny side cover, I know o-ring. I want to try and tighten the cable at the housing without pulling off the cover until i can get time to pull it off and inspect. Will it hurt anything internally if i try to tighten the cable nut at the housing to see if maybe it backed off before i pull the whole thing off? I hope this makes since....

It's worth a try. As long as you don't hang off of it.

Check your tranny/exhaust hanger bolts while down there. They are usually the cause for leaking fluid in that area.

Also check to see exactly where the leak is coming from on the cable. If it's leaking right where the cable goes into the cover then your right about it possibly being the o-ring. If it's coming out further down the cable, like right where the sheath starts, it's gonna be the seal in the end of the cable. No fix for that except to replace the cable. Also check the lower tranny mount bolts on the cover as LP suggested. Notorious for leaking there.

This can also be caused by the transmission vent being clogged. When the transmission fluid gets hot and expands it is forced into the cable sheath since the transmission can't vent properly.

ok so this may be very stupid but where is the transmission vent?
I did get under to tighten the cable at the housing and it was real lose. I got a full turn and 1/2 on it until snug. I hope this was the issue and the o-ring is still ok! fingers crossed!

That's more than likely the root of your leak then. The vent hose is right behind the rear cylinder on top of the tranny. It's a short crooked rubber hose.

Rubber hose right behind the starter.
