Original Owner check???
In 1976, I bought my basket 66FL from a guy who said it was originally an Oakland police bike he bought at auction.
Does Harley keep records as to who the first owner was? Maybe that was something done with fleet bikes like for police departments?
I heard a vague rumor that Harley may have kept such records. Might be bunk; but has anybody ever had any luck with this, or discussed it here before?
Thanks.

Is there, like, a "CARFAX" for Harleys? (A number you can call to get the history of your vehicle?)
Anybody ever heard of anything like that?
There are ways to get title searches depending on the state you live in, I don't know about CA. But even here in TX, the info available only goes back to when they started keeping computer records. Someone in city records might be your best bet if you catch them on a good day. Good luck.
There is a cycle version:

I've never used it and don't know whether it shows owner history or just title/ accident history, but I'm guessing even if it has owner history it probably won't go back to the 60's. About the only way to go back that far is if it's only had a few owners and you're able to chase them back to the original owner (IE, call each one and find out who they bought it from and if they have contact info for the previous owner). People try this all the time with vintage cars and rarely are able to trace back more than one or two steps because people just don't keep paperwork for vehicles they've sold.

Thanks guys! If i have any luck, I'll post the results here.
OKAY: I JUST TRIED CYCLECHEX...Typed in my 66FL16xxx number three times to find out if there was a report in their files, and it didn't work. I'm guessing it doesn't recognize the old numbers. But many thanks all the same.

the old vins are not much good. In the late 70's CA started assigning VIN's to the 13 and later 17 digit system ( The blue plate).
If so, CA DMV may have records.
If you are just trying to find out if it was a service vehicle- look for changes in the electrical system ( genny with cooler, radio diodes etc.) added radio pack harness.
Some PD's stamp a unit number on the left top frame rail under the seat area.
