Hello this is my first post on this form; first I have a 1996 Road King. Just had my starter change and worked good for about 3 days and now it still starts the bike up but gives a grinding sound and the starter is trying to start the bike. Could anyone give me helpful hints to fix this problem as rolling thunder is come up and I would like to make sure this problem is fixed before then.
Grinding is usually the starter clutch. You didn't say if the new starter is new or HD or aftermarket but HD has not used the best clutches in past history. Be sure battery is good and if it is I would take it back/call the installer and see what they can do for you. This is not a difficult fix if you have some mechanical background and a service manual but being as it has jus been done I would let them worry about it. It will cost you about a hundred bucks to do it yourself with an ALLBALLS clutch. You can google them or buy through Drag Specialties. Where in Virginia are you.
