Just went to the store that did the warranty work...I realy didn't want anyone wrenching on it for the fix, they gave me an insert that replaces the one that got mucked up.

Seems like an easy fix...old one pulls straight out and the new one threads in with a straight slot screw driver.
Good to know. The only reason I suggested you go back to the dealer that screwed up is I thought the fairing might have to be replaced. If that had been the case, you don't want them thinking you were responsible for the cross threading. I never take my bike to the dealer unless absolutely necessary for warranty work like you were forced to do.

It seems to me that Harley makes a replacement piece that hasa little larger outside diameter for this repair..

You can get it out yourself if you are careful and lucky. Loosen all the others and work the fairing out a little and grasp the inner nut that screw is cross threaded into with some small needle nose vice grips, then screw the screw out. After you have it off, epoxy/glue the nut insert into place and let set up. [Before you do this chase the threads with a tap,] When reassembling use a lubricant on all the screws such as white lube and don't overtighten. This has happened to my bike but usually is savable and preventable.

Threaded inserts? Is this a MOD that can be made to the lower fairing screws?
Sorry.I was talking about my Road Glide fairing. It may be different than you SG.
Anyway, the screws that hold the inner fairing to the outer just screw into plastic. The screws are like sheet metal screws.

Yep, those are a POS. Had to retap mine. Just don't force them in - if they won't screw in easy, try switching screws. Also, spray in some Silicon lub in the insert. Luckly, I have not had to glue in mine yet. Had it apart like six times.
