Went to replace my derby cover today and decided to detail my bike while I was at it. Just as I finished detailing (including the wheels), a neighbor stopped by to talk shop. Mid-conversation, I look down at my front tire and see a gash/gouge that was about 1/2" long running diagonally. After a few expletives, I pull out a tiny screwdriver to see how deep it was. Damn thing is 5/16" deep. Since that is deeper than the tread, the puncture goes well into the body of the tire and could easily cause tire failure at speed. Didn't look like it had been there long because the edges were still sharp and there wasn't any dirt or debris in the gouge. Tire is the stock Dunlop with only 6k miles on it and I don't recall hitting any road debris or potholes.
It was sheer dumb luck that I noticed this with the bike up on my jack instead of experiencing a 70mph front tire blow out tomorrow on the way to work.
I highly recommend that everyone check your tires now!!! I'll be checking mine at least once a week.
Sounds like the same thing I just went through. The back rim was having the chrome peal off I went to the dealer he replaced the rim under warranty and when they were installing
the tire the mechanic noticed the tire cracking they showed me the tire and it had a deep
crack in the tread they also replaced the tire also under warranty. I talked to the dealer about a week later he said HD wanted that tire back pronto.
good catch. i was cleaning mine for a long weekend trip while back and found a sheet metal screw in the center of the tire. it only had 2000 miles on it. but just glad i saw it before i headed out
Wow! Do you think that the gash was from a road hazard or from a slash job? Glad you caught it. I inspect my tires frequently. One of my biggest fears is a tire failure.
...and I don't recall hitting any road debris or potholes...
I've been stopped twice for "driving somewhat erratically" while on the bike...I tend to try and avoid those mysterious little shiny things on the road.
Good on you for finding the cut before it became a crash!
