Default 2012 Street Glide rev limiter causing engine shutdown

One for the forum...was out last night with the boys...they ride pretty hard....I tend not too. Sitting at a light...then rolling hard out of first into 2nd gear..the bike stalled. I was like WTF?!?! Finally got it started..and ran fine. Later that night got on it hard again...into the redline..again (I have a power commander 5, with rev extended) and it did the same thing...engine cut out in like 2nd or 3rd gear.

Question...is the rev limiter designed to cut the engine out? Why can those guys redline the **** out of their bikes no problem and I have to be limited? (just for reference...they ride Big Dogs..and a couple of guys have the same bike as I do). This can cause a serious accident if the bike cuts out while I'm in traffic!!! I know that there is a key/code that I can get from the folks at power commander to extend the rev even more.

Is there a bypass or something I can disconnect?

The bike actually shuts off and you have to restart it?? That's a little strange. The rev limiter will usually just retard the motor enough to let you know you're screwing up. But I've never seen one actually shut off. Either way, it's not something you want to do very often. Shift sooner. You're topped out on power and not gaining anything by redlining the motor.

the rev limiter shuts off the injectors at a certain rpm and when the engine rpms drop below that rpm they turn back on...so, you seem to have another problem...

I wasn't really trying to redline the motor per se, just getting on her hard. I can't tell where it's cutting out as the RPM needle stops at 5000 RPM. How do I know when I'm topped out..if I can't SEE when I am? To me, it sounded like I had a lot more RPMs to go in the shift range. I've only owned the bike for a month so I'm still on a learning curve here. Thanks for your replies.

I guess that's what's happening??? The engine reaches a certain RPM then cuts out. As the RPM comes back down to a more acceptable range, the bike can be restarted or I just pop the clutch and it restarts. Just sucks if that's the case, can really cause an accident if I'm on the highway or in local traffic.

Like I mentioned before, I generally don't ride hard. But if I need too, I guess I need to learn what the maximum shift bands are for each gear. Just sucks being left in the dust when the engine quits.

As previously mentioned, you have another issue besides the rev limiter. Hitting the rev limiter will not shut the bike off such that you need to restart it. The rev limiter only shuts it off temporarily when the RPM reaches a set limit and the "restart" happens automatically when the RPM drop below the set threshold. The rev limiter should function (on and off) as a completely passive system that requires no input from the rider.

As sated rev limiter will not completely shut bike off to point where you have to restart. I would be looking at the pc5 you have.

Well the readings on the tach go to 8000 so if the needle stopped at 5000 then the rev limiter is doing what it is suppose to, assuming the limiter is set to 5000.

Not necessarily. I think I've read of a glitch with the PCs and the rev extend. If I remeber correctly the rev extend will allow the engine to rev to 6200 but the tach will not go higher than 5 or 55K.
