I took the fabric out of the way to inspect and lubricate mine.
When the top cover is not well seated onto the saddlebag (far enough towards the frame), the outermost part of the hinge cannot fold and reach the self locking position; it cannot wrap-around the middle flap. Hinges remain in this position ' !/i ' rather than this one ' !|i '

The problem also occurs when one or the two vertical catches (against the frame) aren't fully inserted.

I recall seeing a procedure in the owner manual about bending tabs to adjust the latching. So far, mine work fine and stay latched over the nasty heaves.

Was thinking of having to bend the tabs but was hoping some thing more mechanical. I will check the springs.

What is this search you speak of, I'll be a man and tear it apart, take twice as long probably brake some thing then come and do a search and find the easy and correct way.
Type Saddle bag lid spring in the little box at the top of the page and watch all the **** that pops up. If I get a chance (when not at work) I will try to find the link that had the best procedure with pictures and everything. It took me a long time and a lot of broken **** to start reading directions first. ((8 (l) DOH!!

The spring on mine broke right after warranty went out. Went to dealer to get new hinge. Wow 80.00 no thanks. I then thought to ask about springs. They actually stock them. Replaced the spring 2.00 I think but it does take time to do it right. Just don't get in a hurry..

The spring was updated a while back; new PN is 90707-00A. The projecting leg has been reshaped. I will bet that the OPs springs are broken; this is very common. Some say they are a PITA and it will take a little longer to do the first one but it takes me about 15 minutes a spring. Instructions follow:

I just changed the spring on one of mine this past weekend. It took about 40 minutes. The only hard part was squeezing the end of the hinge down to lock in the pin. Easy to open and take the pin out, hard to close it again. I tried everything including a very large set of channel locks, in the end I held the lid over the edge of my work bench and smacked the hinge with a hammer a few times.

You didn't have to close the hinge, just put a dab of silicone sealant at the end and that will hold it.
