Default Whats too rich

Looking for some comparisons. When I first purchased my 2010 Street Glide I did a simple stage 1 consisting of a 2-1 Pro pipe, free breathing Screaming Eagle/Fuel Moto breather and a Fuel Moto PCV with canned Fuel Moto map. Bike ran good but I didn't like the Pro Pipe. This winter I switched to a Cobra Powerport head pipe and Fuel Moto Dyno tune mufflers. I sent my PCV back to Fuel Moto and they very graciously retuned it for the new pipes. It runs super, however I have noticed that the mufflers are definately black just inside. It smells a little rich as well, but again, it runs great. I did not have the black richer look inside the Pro Pipe. So my question is whats considered too rich on the newer touring bikes?

I wouldn't put too much faith in using the exhaust pipe color as an indicator of it being rich or lean. If you're really concerned either have it run on a dyno and get the A/F ratio monitered, or buy the auto tune setup for the PC V. Either way it'll cost you 3 to 4 hundred dollars.

Too rich is anything under 40mpg on your set up. I ride a 120r that consistently beats 40mpg... but I use a real tuner and not a piggy back with a 'canned' map. Canned maps always are set up rich as a safety measure. The black isn't my concern, but smelling gas really is.

Then I must be too rich. I'm under 40.

A couple of thoughts... has your fuel mileage changed and have you "read" your spark plugs?

+1 on the too rich. wurk-truk is right when saying 40mpg or better with that set-up if your not constantly on the throttle. Seems to be a non-stop debate about running Harley's on a rich fuel mixture to cool them down, when in reality a properly tuned motor will run just as cool and not shorten the engine's life by 30 percent.

I didn't think that a spark plug reading on these newer "sensor everything" bikes was a good indicator?

here's what I was told last century when my bikes didnt have exhaust heat shields. Carbon inside the end of your pipe is a good thing. blue pipes, bike is rich, yellow pipes, bike is lean.
Is that an accurate statement, It was what you heard in bars and garages.
Personally I like to see some carbon in the inside of my exhaust.
