I think you have traced the problem to the starter switch sticking.
swap it out

Could be a damaged or trapped wire. Have you disturbed the controls recently? Inspect inside the switch housing and follow the starter wires into the harness.
Problem finally showed itself. Starter handlebar button bad. It caused starter to engage going down the road, did not realize noise was starter. Howling bearing sound. Voltage would drop at this time. Then it started to self engage when ING. Switch was turned from off to on. This happened after I tour down the primary, to check compensator bolt and stator magnets.
Next and final, button had to be pushed multiple times to work. This problem would last and made problem easy to find. All other problem were off and on . You have to hate those ghost electrical problems. Dealer had 7 in stock.
Also after 10,000 Mi, my compensator started to slap primary chain again. When I had it apart I saw no sing of a problem. I believe this Starter Button was also causing chain slap with a voltage change when button was engaged, this is to be proven by if it happens again! Starter does sound better, may just be me .
Thought I might have to look up DAWG when I’m in Laconia .
