I agree with what all you guys said, and a little never seize or anti seize on the plug threads. However, what i really want to know is where did DrPlastic get his Aviatar? I really really want to know? I can't take my eyes off of it!!!
It is normal. I would ask the tech or the service manager about the tech's experience. Not surprisingly, a fair number of tech's doing oil changes may be somewhat new at their trade. And if he is new and somewhat "excitable" like a lot of "kids" are when first getting into something, it may explain why he made a bigger deal about it than he probably should have.
I think it's good that the dealership is planing on re-checking it though. I have had 4 new Harley's and they have all had a fair number of metal at the first oil change. Doesn't the owners manual mention that? Or is it the service manual?
I would be more concerned about the (possibly) stripped plug threads on the rear head more than I would be concerned about shavings at 1000 miles--- for now anyway....
Any engine will show metal at the first change. I too changed mine 3 times by 1000 miles. Probably overkill but it felt good to do so....
I agree that metal shaving at first oil change is normal. It's just all the internal machining surfaces seating themselves. Just make sure the writer anotates it for the future. You'll be OK. Keep us informed. BTW: Do you check the oil at every fill up or so? This will be a good time for you to check for metal on the dipstick.
The plug issue does worry me, he was able to get the plug back in? Did he chase the treads with a thread chaser or did they heli-coil it? How long was the bike in the shop before they gave it back to you?
I HAVE A 2010 RG I DIDNT FIND much at my 1000 mile oil change but i bought some magnets for the oil filter and one for the drain plug that i found on this forum. these things are strong. im am about to change the oil for the 1st time since putting them on, i will take pictures of the oil and im going to cut the filer in halfto see whats in it i have 2000 miles on the oil and it looks clean

Cool, please post results of magnet use, I was looking at that for my RKC.
