'09 Street Glide -Changing primary oil -Quick question..
$200 for a service on a Harley, so I'm buying a lift and a shop manual and doing it myself. I've changed the oil, but never the primary...
My '09 Street Glide doesn't have a primary inspection cover, so after I drain, is it ok to remove the derby cover & fill it there?
Derby cover is fine. You'll need a small tipped funnel and about 36 oz. of lube, or fill it until the lower portion of the clutch basket is submerged.
...when the bike is level. If it's on its stand then you should be ok. Check the manual for the correct amount to put in. My '07 takes 38oz on a wet fluid change, but it may not be the same for your '09. Go slow and have fun! Don't forget the torque wrench.
while it is draining, work the clutch to get the fluid out that is stuck between the discs/plates.
you could even use a cable tie to hold the clutch lever in ( separating the plates)
the plug is magnetic, wipe it off.
be very careful replacing the steel drain plugs into aluminum.
to start the plug, turn counter clockwise until it "clicks" - the threads are now aligned and you can turn the plug clockwise
I usually reuse the O ring seal, I just turn it so a fresh round section is at the bottom, if it is all squared off or cracked replace it.
I usually have common gaskets and seals in the garage- saves a last minute run to the shop

I always take the cover off first (just to make sure the screws come off). If you drain it, then strip a screw, no way to fill it up without minor surgery.
I've done the same thing after I received the first bill for an oil change. Bought a lift and try to do as much of my own service as possible. Now you just end up buying a bunch of expensive tools. I also found the fixmyhog DVDs good value.
Cheers

Oh yeah, the cover screws are Torx heads and they're size 27, NOT 25's. If you use the 25's, you'll round them out. If the O-ring looks good you can reuse it.
