My '09 UC started making an intermitant noise from the tranny. Since I have ESP, I took it to the dealer. Tranny full of metal shavings. They pulled the gear set out and you can see where things are making contact, but no sign of root cause. They are replacing it, but I an growing tired of all the failures on this bike. Only 54,000 miles, too many issues. Now I am on vacation with no bike.
Makes me wonder if these main drive gear failures are in some way related to the automatic primary tensioner.
Keep an ear out for that- it will sing to you quite noticably if it ratchets up too tight. A loud singing/whining sound from the primary that changes pitch with the rpm's.
I've had to reset my chain tensioner and will not be making any drag-race starts anymore unless I feel the desire to do it again. The automatic tensioner is on the side that the chain will get sloppy and loose because it gets pushed into the clutch sprocket, while the top side gets stretched tight from being pulled away from it.
Lucky for me the input shaft bearing took out the seal and it started to leak before total failure at 72,000 on my 08 RKC. I rode it to the shop. Everything else internal but the bearing and seal survived. Nothing $900 couldn't fix. I had been using Mobil One gear lube 75-90. They recommended switching to Redline. We'll see how many miles I get that.
