Have a 2011 FLTRX. 4000kms on it. At 500km I changed out the primary fluid from new, whatever they put in at factory, to Bel-Ray Primary Chaincase lube. I had used this in my '09 with good results. Went to change it out and couldnt find any at store, so went with Spectro Chaincase lube. Now this is what Im getting. Running up to a light for example, say in 2nd gear I get a knocking sound from the primary area. Pull the clutch in and it slowly gets quieter and goes away. Let clutch out and the knock comes back. Almost a similar sound to lugging the engine, but thats not it. Fluid level was correct. Any ideas or anyone else using Spectro in the chaincase? Clutch adjustment is fine as well.
I had considerable issues with my bike when it was new due to the cheap stock compensators in the 2010's. I put in a SE compensator and it was a little quieter but still noisey. Did the swap at 9200 miles just before my trip to Sturgis last year. As part of the swap I put in a new chain tensioner since the original one had a good amount of wear on it for 9200 miles.
It wasn't until I tried an experiment prior to my Sturgis trip that things got quiet for good. I use Amsoil in all three holes. Anyway, I took the derby cover off and added more Amsoil until the chain tensioner and the chain section sitting on it were emersed in oil and then buttoned it back up. It's been that way ever since and it's as quiet as a mouse. 18,000 miles now and counting.
Well, that was my cure for the racket coming from the primary. Works for me despite what others say about the proper oil level.
The way I looked at it back then was if it turned out it was overfilled and caused an issue, I would just drain it and put the recommend amount in. That hasn't happened and I continue to refill it to that level during each service.
Thanks for the info. Like I mentioned the Bel-Ray ran super quiet. My only concern is that it is a little thicker visocity, and I have heard that is not the best solution in a primary. Then again Bel-Ray has been in the game for a long time and must know there stuff. FWIW the Spectro 6-speed synthetic I put in makes the trans run like glass.
