Default Red Line Package Deal - Quantities?

I did the 10k on my UC yesterday. Previously, I had been running Syn3 in all 3 holes. I decided to go with Red Line and bought the Red Line Big Twin 20W50 Powerpack from Racer Parts Wholesale. I'm curious....why the quantities? I ended up having to purchase an extra quart of the Primary Chaincase Oil so I would have the extra 6 oz to properly fill the primary with 38 oz. When I did the crankcase, I put in 3 1/2 quarts, went for a ride and then, checked the level. It was all the way up to the full (hot) mark so I didn't need any additional oil. Maybe, I'll need that unused 1/2 quart before the next service interval. But, the PowerPack came with 5 quarts...arghhh...

So, I have an extra (unopened) quart of 20W50 oil and I had to purchase an additional quart of primary oil. It sure would be nice if the PowerPack could be bought with 4 quarts of 20W50 oil and 2 quarts of primary oil.

OK...I'm through venting. BTW...I have a nice funnel which works great for putting the tranny oil in. It is a real pain to clean, though. My wife thinks I look really kewl in my Red Line hat.

I'm trying to decide what to do for my next service interval. Should I buy the PowerPack again? I have the extra primary oil left over so I'll be OK with that. Then, I would have 2 extra quarts of 20W50 oil. Hmmm...maybe after 3 service intervals, I'll have enough extra quarts of 20W50 to do the change without having to buy the PowerPack....just a quart of tranny oil. Oh boy...then, I 'll have a bunch of hats and funnels. The possibilities are endless.........

I just ordered 2 of those kits ($85.00 each from Direct Harley Parts) so I wouldn't have to pay shipping. That 5 quarts crankcase one quart Primary thing has me confused also.

I figure if you buy the powerpack 3 times, you end up with enough engine oil for four oil changes. Kind of a buy 3 get 1 free deal. Obviously you still need to buy the other fluids, but it is what it is I suppose. Luckily my 04 only requires 1 quart in the primary, so I don't have your 38 ounce problem. Of course eventually you'll have enough left over that you won't need to buy an extra quart. Eventually.

Just refilling the primary with 32 oz instead of 38 isn't going to cause any problems at all. 38 oz is just the amount needed to fill it. And the left over engine oil? Well, you might need to add a quart or so before your next oil change. It's not unusual for a HD TWC to use that much in a few thousand miles.

If they provided 2 qts. of primary oil and you continued to buy the PowerPack, you'd quickly compile more primary oil than you would ever use. Buying an extra quart will allow you to use it five times (6 oz. at a time). The five quarts of engine oil is a mystery, though.

When I've bought the Redline powerpack in the past, I put the quart of primary fluid in the primary and then added the other 6 oz of oil needed from the left over 20w50. Not a big deal, but yes I have a few bottles of 20w50 in my garage.

I'm not familiar with those kits. Anything is better than the Syn3 crap. I use Mobil-1 and it has served me very well. Sounds like you are just paying extra money for someone to package everything up in a kit, that you could easily go purchase yourself.
