Default Battery Charging Mystry

I managed to leave my ignition switch on and completely drained the 3 year old battery on my 2003 FLHTCi. When I tried to charge it up using the Battery Tender, I got the flashing red light saying it was not connected correctly. So I put on a traditional charger for a couple of hours after which the Battery Tender appeared to be OK. However, after about 16 hours of charging with the Battery Tender the flashing green light indicating 80% charge does not come on. I have successfully started the mike several times and done a short run. However, I am a bit nervous about doing a long run because I am not sure what is happening with the battery. Is my battery shot? Any thought would be appreciated.

Should be ok, I'd think if it seems to be starting/running ok. you can always have a car parts place test it for you for free. But what I really want solved, is where the "e" in mystery went from the title. lol. Just kidding. I had to.

3 years is about the lifespan of a battery anyway.

why risk burning out your regulator, stator winding, etc......your battery is three years old...a new one will cost you about 125 bucks.

My experience with lead-acid batteries is that once they are completely dead they are never the same. That battery is probably going to let you down in the near future. My advice along with everyone else who answered this thread is to replace the battery before it before it lets you down.

How long was the battery left in a discharged state? You might try leaving the battery tender on it charging for 3 days or more...It may still charge up over time...

On the other hand, if left in a discharged state too long, internal plates may have developed sulphate coating on them which will prevent battery from taking a full charge.

You can't go wrong with a new battery, maybe its time...

Put it on a regular charger for 24 hrs. and if your charging system is good, you should be good to go.

If the battery is OK after testing, and it's it's good enough to start your bike, go for a long ride and let your charging system top it off. Best of both worlds that way..
