Now! After reading all the cliches (everyone is trying to get you, nobody gives a damn about bikes, we are all targets, etc.) that show up in threads about accidents, let me ask the most important question that no one ever seems to bring up...
Did you learn anything from this accident that might prevent another in the future?
About time! x2
Also, any endorsements of safety equipment you were wearing or regrets for not wearing?
Most be something with the 2011 RK's, I had mine less than a month when I got taken out by a van. Hope surgery goes well and that your recovery is speedy.
But HOPEFULLY not the RKC's!! I've had mine about 6 months (and about 8,000 miles), so maybe I'm past the danger point.
Seriously though, and meaning no offense to you or the OP, I wonder if there are statistics on the number of craches that occur with riders that haven't had that particular bike long. It's not about a lack of riding skills or general experience, but maybe a lack of experience with the emergency handling characteristics of that particular bike. I know my Sporty and my RKC both handled very well, but they also handle very differently. A reaction that worked on the Sporty might not be enough (or could be too much) on the Road King.

I was wearing Boots and jeans as I always do But still got stitches in my leg but no road rash. Ankle was prob saved by the boots. DOT half helmet who cares what you look like they are DOT for a Reason! Not sure if anything other than a race jacket with reinforcements in the arms and shoulders would have saved my arm. I was wearing my HD factory Tshirt from York PA so when I get better guess that will have to be my first ride since it was cut off.
Glad you're ok...Don't know how long you've been riding, but the minute you think it will never happen to you and you let your guard down is when things usually happen. Stay safe.
100% correct I have been riding for 20+ years and every ride is a learning experience. This last ride was just a little more humbling and painful but with the years I have been riding I have always respected the machine and the abilities I have to ride within my own limits. Love life and love bikes hate to see either one banged up.
Sorry you lost the bike but I am glad that you are still with us and made it through. Good luck with the future surgery. Follow the rehab and you will be back in the saddle soon.
