Have a 04 Ultra with stage 1 and Rinehart 2to1 exhaust, seems to run hot and lean. The dealership says if I put the race tuner in it will help. Why shouldn't the stage 1 download work.
It's runing hot because it's running lean.
The way it was explained to me was that the stage 1 download just raises the RPM limits.
I did the download on my 04 and since have ended up having to buy and install the race tuner.
Don't waste your money on the download. If I would have listened, I could have saved the 150 bucks on the download.

I did it on my 02 with SE air cleaner and SE II performance pipes it worked great, somone said all it does is raise the rpm limiter, thats wrong, it is a remap same as a PCIII would do only you get the map harley has developed on their dynos for their products. It will not do as good with a non harley exhaust as that is what it was mapped to. You will do better to go with a PCIII or a SERT and have it dynoed to your setup.
IsPCIII USBthe way to go vs SERT? I have read and read and read till I am blue in the face the SERT once used is vehicle specific isn't it? I am planning on rinehart true duals, stage 1 air cleaner and thus far planned on PCIII USB. Is this ok on RKC? Thanks

Long as you get the PCIII that fits a 98 and the correct map for your EVO motor,or have it dynoed.
Don't listen to these guys and their EPA stuff. The 2006-2007 stage 1 downloads are epa legal so in that sense they are true. First lets look at the stage 1 download. The download corrects fuel timing and raises rev-limit. They are SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED for Screamin' Eagle slip-on exhaust and a Screamin" Eagle hi-flow air cleaner. In 2006 the exhaust and air cleaner elements have changed, so has the download. The more restrictive slip-on requires less fuel and timing changes. The 07 Download is pretty much useless, As is the slip-on's and paper element. The 04 system has no 02 sensor or anything for that matter to monitor what is exiting your exhaust pipe. It thinks you have a restrictive slip-on, and stock head pipes. The dealer should have never even recommended it. A PCUSB or Race Tuner is a must with true duals. Your bike is running lean because you now have a high flow exhaust system and air cleaner and not enough mid range fuel corrections.
The Harley download has not been a good option since 05. If you search and read some of the complaints about the new 06's (last year) you will see what I mean. The download is EPA compliant, which means your bike is still going to run lean. I prefer the SERT over the PCIII. The PCIII installs on your bike and if it goes out (like mine did a couple of years ago) you lose the ability to change your ECM and it goes back to stock. The SERT is basically a customized download (map) that you can change and adjust every time you upgrade your bike. Here is a good article to read to help you understand how the two work. https://www.hdforums.com/m_181817/tm.htm

That was a good old post. Thanks! I continue to be frustrated that with carbys, I could do and had to do every kind of roadside and shop repair of them and it all made sense. I feel stupid when it comes to how to work on or tune FIs.
