Just bought a 2007 RK about two weeks ago. The bike seems to have a really loud fifth gear, but I'm not sure the sound comes from the transmission. Almost sounds like the lifters are sloppy, but you would expect that in all gears I would assume.
The bike just had it's 5k service at the dealer and nothing was noted about any issues with motor or trans.
Also, is there any overall issue with the 2007 engine lifters and cams? I almost swear there's a lot more ping in the engine then one would expect. Sounds like a bad seating of a valve or something similar to that.
I put the Isolated Drive System rear pulley on my '07 and now I have NO 5th gear noise at all. I also have the SE compensator, but that didn't seem to change the noise of 5th gear by itself.
Do a quick search, a lot of info. It was a HD design change to go to a stright cut gear in 5th for a while. Its normal to have more "whining".
But you may also have a pinging or valve train noise, do you know the history of your bike? Did the previous owner change anything , pipes, air filter etc, did they install a tuner. Its not uncommon for bikes to have a "stage 1" engine modification on them and if no tuner was added you may also have pinging or detonation.
07 Sg w/ 29k miles... 5th gear has whined since new. I've tried various trans fluids and have Redline Heavy now & installed the IDS rear & a SE Comp as well.
Still whines in 5th gear ...I guess Im used to it now but still dont like it
