Default Silver vs Gold Anti-Seize

I've noticed in several places the service manual mentions using Silver Anti-Seize compound. I have Gold Anti-Seize compound. Is there any difference?

Gold- must be better.

The silver permatex is what I've used for years --- and i think my tube is more than 20 years old.

I do have a couple of "one use" packs in my touring tool kit which came with my supertrapps- they do look kind of gold-ish, maybe that is a higher heat rating...

Silver is zinc based, gold is copper based. General usage is, copper for high temp situations zinc for better corrosion protection.

One (gold) you do not want to use on your heads, spark plugs etc. Do what you want, but when things go south sometime (and they will) you have to go look in the mirror for the culprit.

What's the problem of using the gold (copper) on spark plugs?

All anti-seize is an insulator, have seen issues of to many to count because of anti-seize on spark plugs. Some people swear by it for it's ability to break loose in the spark plug holes. I for the other, doing drive-ability problems on automobiles is one of the first places I go and look for anti-seize on the plug threads. Copper based is good to 1800'F, high temperature seizing and galling, the silver is nickel based, good to 1600'F, used with high temperature and high contact pressure. Here is a great site for anti-seize, tds.loctite.com go down to "technology" bring in the word anti-seize, hit search. There is 30 different Loctite anti-seize selections available, Quite interesting.

Good stuff Steve. I can only say that at the oil refinery I work at we use copper coat on the high temp valving and silver anti seize on lower temp valving. Just something we are trained to do because silver anti seize breaks down quicker at higher temps. That's really my only experience with it.
