I like the post in which the standard back plate was cut. I like that becuse now you can use a free air case vent kit with it. If you get the SE backplate, and want to use a free air case vent, you have to cut the barrels off.
i bought the old se kit from fuelmoto and used some vht bbq paint and painted it black. k&n filter, and dark custom ac cover.
i've only had one problem in the rain, pre rain sock, and that was when the rain was coming down, hard, at a 45* angle from my right. no lowers either. didn't stall, but bike sure didn't like it. sputtered a little bit, and hesitated when you would give it throttle. but it was raining hard enough that we thought it prudent to get off the interstate anyway. so hit the next exit, and hung out under the roof at the gas station until it settled down.
Did you have to replace the gasket? I'm running the SE AC with the "football" cover. Thinking about taking it off, painting it black like you did, but wonder if I'll need to replace the gasket when I do.
I went HD ventilator - is was an add before it went out the Dealer doorway.
I do not know what they cost, I later added the K&N element and i think it helps a little.
Vent item came with a rain sock that I keep in the saddle bag.
Cheapest your gonna find and works great is the Vance and Hines v02 naked. Its like $110 from directharleyparts. Then add whatever cover you want. Love mine and none of the oil leaking from filter crap so many people seem to have.

you may have to, but you may be able to salvage the old one. i can't say either way cause i painted mine before i did the initial installation, so i just used the gaskets that came with the kit. but the gaskets that came of the original were still in good shape if that helps.
The suggestion by Keithhu is right on. I used Fuelmoto chromed intake and vintage Harley cover off eBay. Looks great with the smallest cover possible cover, about 5 1/2 inch. Really shows off the beauty of the engine. The FM back plate is a better than the others, from my research.
