I had my compensator replaced about 1 year ago, and its only got about 3000 miles on it..
But I have this noise starting to get worse and I think its coming from it !
Clatter clicking knocking!!!
Now I had a trip to Wisconsin coming up so I pulled the primary cover off just make sure the nut was not loose cause Steeler says they can see it for 2 weeks!!!
Anyway its getting worse!!
You can really hear it about 50 mph at 2000 rpms really noticeablt clatter!!
No its not pinging
I am FORD technician and I know this is a strange noise!!
SO anybody have A SE compensator go bad and make noise!!
Here is the 'tell'. If you can make the noise, and then shut the noise off just using the throttle? Right in the area of light cruise? As soon as you decel, it goes away, and as soon as you twist the throttle, it goes away?
THAT is THE noise these pieces of sheet do. It is louder than a lifter noise, emanates from the left side, and can REALLY hear it along side of a divider wall? Yup!
I have the same dam problem on my 08 Ultra-Classic. I replaced the compensator with S.E. one, thought, I would benifit from it, but the noise, sounds like hell. Only got 23K, can't be wore-out already! I used red-lock-tite, cleaned threads with tap, brake-cleaner, new bolt, torqued that nut with back-up box wrench and torque wrench. I guess I will have to go into the primay again!
There are quite a few reported issues with the SE compensator. Many who changed to it for peace of mind wished they hadn't. From what I hear the originals springs may have been weaker but it lasted a hell of a lot longer?
