I had a buddy that just bought a 2012 SG too. He had the same problem as soon as I told him about this thread. The dealer took care or it immediately. Bike only had 200 miles on it.
Hopefully the dealer wont give me any grief on thursday, they of course said they never heard of the problem the usual response. I did a search on here and it looks like its a wide problem for late 2011 and 2012 touring bikes with some getting theirs replaced a couple of times. My rear tire looks fine. I wonder if I left it alone if it would blow or is it just cosmetic?
Just checked my 12 sg and it has some slight dry rot too but it does have one crack about a half inch. Will be at dealer this weekend as well! Thanks for heads up
I went to the dealer and they advised they had never heard of a tire problem but would email the rep. I also asked about the regulator campaign. The next day I got a response advising the tire would not be covered because it was cosmetic and did not effect the safety aspect of the tire. They also advised that since I already had 1300 miles on the bike and the regulator was still functioning fine, my regulator was fine and did not need to be replaced.
So today I stopped by another dealer for the hell of it and asked about the regulator and was advised the MOCO advised it was recommended that the regulator be replaced regardless how it is functioning. So they pulled her in the shop and replaced it for me. The tech took a look at my front tire and advised "That front tire needs to be replaced" No emailing reps or nothing...Of course they didn't have the tire in stock so another trip for me in the morning before work and I should be good to go....It all depends how much the dealer wants go that extra mile to help.... Please name the first dealer so the rest of us can avoid them.
I checked mine last night. No cracking on either the front or the back. Both tires were made the seventh week of 2012 (based on the number in the oval 0712), which makes me feel good. I wonder if there's a specific range of dates where the problems are more prevelant. It would be interesting to know. Anyway, all is good for now but I'll certainly keep my eye on them.
Take care.
+1
Had my front tire replaced due to cupping, would like to know if there is an issue with the replacement ( replaced in late November. )
As for the VR, did that dealer put their response in writing? I would think the MOCO would like to know ( and everyone else would like the name of the dealer. )
The new tire came in so I went back to the dealer. Before they pulled my bike in to swap tires the tech noticed on the new tire the sidewall was in worse shape then my tire! It was manufactured Feb of 2012. There was a 2 inch slit in the sidewall you could dig your fingernail into. They placed an order for 5 tires and they should be in mid next week. The tech advised they will look over all 5 tires before they call me back in. They advised and acknowledged there is obviously some sort of front tire problem and said I was the first to bring it to there attention. I'll update next week when I get the new tire.
As far as the regulator It is working as it should, my volt gauge though not that accurate at lease reads 14.5 at idle and not pegged at 15 to 15.5 all of the time as with the old regulator.
I'd rather not name the dealer for this was not the reason of the post but I will mention that it is Blue springs HD that id really taking care of me with the new tire and regulator.
My front tire says 1711 and the rear 1411, which tells me the tires were made fresh for the bike cuz the manufacture date was close to the time the tires were made also.

I can understand not wanting to dime anyone out but for those of us who live closer to other 3 in the KC area, I dont wanna waste my time going to the same one you did and got the BS...Can you just name the city its in?
Hate to see someone thinking they dont have a problem or have to wait a few weeks to save up for a new tire and get hurt in the meanwhile cuz someones service dept isnt telling the facts. You can PM the name if you wish
