Default Need handlebar help please

Hey guys ( and gals)... I need to replace the bars on my '09 FLHTP.

I am 6'5" and 300#+ ( picture a worlds strongest man competitor) and when I turn to full lock I have to hang my knee off of the bike like a super bike racer so that I don't just hit my knee with the handlebar.

It's really annoying...

So here's the situation I'm in. I need bars that are a good 1.5-2" taller than stock but like most teachers ( I'm a band teacher) I'm barely able to make my payments and mortgage and don't have the $600+ it would take to get all new cables, brake lines, wires, and have the dealer help with the brake ( ABS) plus the few bills for new bars. I CAN afford to spend $200 or so on just a set of new bars.

Has anyone changed over to taller bars without changing anything else? I know you can reroute the clutch cable to gain a few inches, but what about everything else?

Any recommendations on a set of bars that won't require new brake lines etc...?

Supposedly the ergo bars fit the bill, but I'd like to hear from the knowledge base here before jumping in on anything that will eat up my year's worth of toy money...LOL.

Thanks.

but first, have you tried shfting the bars up out of the way?

remove the ign switch ( check the youtube how to- do this correctly !)

remove lower dash

loosen to 2 exposed allens on the handlebar clamp

rotate it up

tighten the allens.

put the stuff back on

thanks for teaching kids how to make noise.

56902-08 Heritage Style handlebars are the solution. I am also 6'5" and had the same issue. Bars brought me up and back...problem solved. Bars are only $79.95 and the Dealer charged $126.00 for labor. Total: $ 205.95

I don't know my friend, just going by your description you sound massive. I would be looking toward a healthy sized ape hanger in the 14-16" category. Call me crazy but it will pull everything in place for you, but keep reading and come up with your own conclusion but you'll need to go up up up.

I'm not sure these would work with the EGlide fairing, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Same with the 56569-09's....

I'll play with the bars a bit tomorrow like MKGuitar suggested and see if I can get them up high enough without making a goofy wrist angle, thanks for the suggestion.

And TUCCI, I know that the solution is just to get some apes on there.... but it'll be years before I can put away enough cash to do that properly thanks to bike, car, and student loan payments. I was just hoping to find something that will do for now.

I only have a little over $200 in my Santee 11" bar install. I bought the bars on here for $100 and the brake line and clutch cable were $119 shipped and i did the install myself.

Khrome Werks + 2 sweepers? Only extra needed is 4 " longer clutch cable...
I bought the KW bars from Powersport junkies for 67.00 shipped...don't remember the cost of clutch cable from HD, but it wasn't much....then do it yourself...should be under 125.00

I had khromewerks wide sweepers put on my '09 EG. No cable changes. Really like them! Ya could also go with the +2 wide sweepers (or 10-12" apes) and the longer harley clutch cable for under $40 but ya may have to lenthen the throttle wires.
