Default Stablizer Links / Motor Mounts

I found my upper motor mount to be worn out, and possibly be causing a wobble at speed.

The bike has 40,000 miles on it. The front rubber mount is still good. I want to replace both links, what else should I be looking at for wear at this time.

How do I replace the links without knocking it out of alignment?

From what I can see, you need to accurately measure the distance between both turnbuckels on the mounts...center of the hole to center of the other hole. Count the exposed threads too and that way you can make sure you put them back in the same position. If you have a worn out upper mount...you are not going to be able to get an accurate measurement of what the correct length is supposed to be. There is a proceedure in the service manual for adjusting and aligning your motor. Check with the manual and follow it to the letter and you will be good to go.

Good Luck.

Went to the dealer yesterday for parts, fifty bucks each for the links.

While there I inquired with service to change out the links. 1 1/2 hours labor. Ok sounds fair, an experienced tech should be able to perform the repair in half the time quoted. Right? Here's the rub.
Make an appointment - 3 weeks out, let the bike sit 4-7 working days before they even touch the bike.

I was a Service Advisor at a Chevy dealer for 5 years and never turned work away no matter how buisy we were. Cash pay work pays better than warranty work.

If they would have told me leave it, they would work it in and have it back to me by the weekend that would have been reasonable.

Got er' done! I replaced both links, and did some cleaning while the tank was off. Total time spent was under 3 hours. Next time around I could probibly cut my time in half.

Way to go, V2. You get the satisfaction of doing it yourself and no green goes to the stealer. I had a problem at the begining of the week and the local dealer said they could not get to it until Saturday because of the crush before Sturgis. So I started poking around with help from the DIY forums, found the problem, and had it finshed and ready to go by mid week.

Glad you got it fixed and saved some bling. Wasn't that worthless instead of useless TC?
