Don't know that I have a favorite, but I would tell anyone to look at the Fuel Moto, Dragos, or MGS websites. I know there are others out there I am forgetting. They are all small shops that have tested their own product and built it from the ground up. I know that you can call and talk to the owner of each of the three brands listed. I don't believe you will ever hear anything bad about any of those pipes. But to each his own. I just want to put the best product I can on my bike.
So just curious how do you force a stright pipe into a tapered gasket? and yes I will look into another company. I do believe V&H does have a quality control issue
There has got to be another variable in this equation. Two sets of pipes from mfg that fit the same. Stock pipe fits and seals properly. I know when installing mine had to "wiggle" them as I did the initial tighten in order for them to move into proper position. Also, the bottom mounting bracket is a bitch to tighten up after the head pipes are tight. But, if you tighten it first, you'll never get the head pipe to seat properly. A short cut here will cause problems.
Did you ask a Harley service dept or two? Maybe one of the techs would be willing to talk to you? I could PM you a Harley dealer I know put those on a friends '10 SG.
Or maybe ask an indy? Yeah, they would rather do the work for ya but they may help anyway. In the hopes that at some point you'll need them.
My background is a maintenance machinist I have been wrenching and machining for about 45 years before I retired. I received a replacement header from V&H and the fit was worse. I had to enlarge the transmission bracket holes just to get the header bolted up to the bracket. The spacer that goes onder the floorboard (the one with 3 holes in it) also had to enlarge the holes in it.
I received a call from the tech support manager (V&H) and he went on and on about how popular the power duals were and that they were the top seller, over 5,000 units. He told me the header should fit and must be some other problem(like the motorcycle) and that he would call me back, well I am still waiting for the call back, that was Friday.
So my advice to everyone is check your exhaust port for leaks, when it will blow out a kitchen match from 5" away at idle well it is a pretty good leak.
Well with a modification to the transmission bracket, cross over bracket, floor board spacer, (three hole) and new exhaust port gaskets from Fuelmoto (thanks Jamie) the power duals are installed without leaks.
No thanks to Vance & Hines this will be my last V&H product ever!!!
