I am finnally taking the next step I'm lookn at a 1999 Ultra it looks clean 21,000 miles. What are some of the things I should be looking for. I heard there was something about cam bearings? or something like that Took awhile to convince wife last thing I need is a broke bike bob
Welcome to the forum. Others will chime in that have more experience with that year. I'd ask to see the maintenance records to see how it has been maintained. You also could run the vin to see if there has been any past problems. Good luck.
Hi there Southerlytide, welcome. When the Twin-cam came out in 99 a certain small percentage of them had a problem with one of the cam bearings. The engine was designed with 2 different styles of bearings used in the cam chest. One of those bearing types was not correct for the application. As I recall it was a "side-loading" issue where the bearing could collapse. A lot of people were pissed off at the MOCO cause they wouldn't do a blanket recall on the bikes, but rather fixed them on a case by case basis. It was 99's and EARLY 2000's that were affected. Bottom line is you should find out if the bike you wany had the bearing change done. If not I would negotiate the price down to reflect the cost of you doin it after the sale. And MAKE SURE you do it.........don't wanna drive around gettin spooked by noises, ruinning the whole experience! Other than that the 99's were ok....Joe Mac
Traded my 99 Ultra for a 2007 Ultra. Loved my 99. Didn't have any problems. Check to see if they have the maintenance records. I had my manual signed each time they did any service...helped on the trade. Ride it and should be ok.
I am riding one and it is all good. Their is a bulletin or what ever they call it that replaced the aft cam bearing for free within 5 years from initial delivery or something like that. Get the VIN and call the mothership and they should have records if it was done. Hope this helps.
Sold my 1999 EG Classic and have now purchased a 2007 Street Glide. The only complaint I had with the EG wasI always wanted to shift it into 6 gear. Now with the 07 I have that 6th gear, alls right with the world.
My brother bought a 99 Ultra got a good price on it had alot more miles than yours. I would check the timing chain tensioners he did have a problem with his. I have an 01 Ultra with 39000 miles. Minetensioners areworn putting in S&S gear dive cams. Good luck enjoy the ride nothing else like it.
