If you want Apes and like Apes and are gonna get Apes anyway, I think you will be happier with doing Apes 1st.
It is gonna be expensive. Have you checked the price on all the parts you are gonna need?

Then you can be looking for mufflers, there are people out there (like me) who change muffflers a lot and you could get a great deal while enjoing those APES.

I agree here. Pipes do very little if the bars kill your shoulders or back.

Having done both 16" apes and cfr's,i would do the pipes first as i believe it would be the biggest expense. The bars you could probably get a good deal down the road if you look.(even ebay).I lucked out as i bought my bars and cables from a forum member who took them off his bike right after his install.(didnt like them). The cfr's are going to be harder to find and they are expensive.(no knock off's)That being said the CFR's are fantastic.

I'd say go with the apers first, you're just going to hear the pipes (slip-ons), but you'll feel those bars. If I could have done only one mod to my bike it would have been the apes, best thing done to my bike!

Apes first, comfort is more important than looks. Get the pipes later with a stage 1 and maybe dyno it when said and done. I wish I had known more when I started the MODS on mine. New bars would have been first. No more pain in back, shoulders or hands.

Pipes are usually done first. The sound, ease, and cheaper cost are easier to justify. Apes are a rather major expense, but had the most significant visual impact on my bike.

You might consider Heritage bars on your RoadKing. They are nice bars, ape-like, and don't require new cables. As I customized, the stainless steel and smaller diameter bar of the Heritages, needed to go.

Good luck!

If you are comfortable with your current bars get the pipes. Comfort above everything.
