I tun it off in the hills or on group rides (why can't people keep a steady speed??) mostly so the blub doesn't burn out. Othewise it is on and I use it all the time! I love that thing!
I turned mine on almost 55K miles ago and it has stayed that way ever since. I actually think that having the switch on the housing is the stupidest thing Harley has done (besides the Air Temp Gauge). As part of that... when it's not engaged, why do I need an orange light to tell me so? Just turn green when it's on and off when it's not.
Mine is on all the time. I don't find anything distracting about the light, red, green, orange, on, off, whatever. I use my cruise constantly, all the time. I wish it engaged at 25mph, I'd use it leaving my neighborhood.
no need to turn it off , that just sends power to the unit , you still have to engage it , but I do check all my switchs from time to time to make sure it will disengage properly in a emergency
if your cruise disengages when you pull the clutch, hit the front brake, or hit the rear brake then i think you have any emergency covered. i don't think i'm going to be reaching for the switch on the fairing cap in an emergency.
but it is part of the scheduled services to check all switches, so i guess you're good to go...
i leave mine on all the time as well. i don't notice the light on the tach, i'm looking down the road, not at my tach.
