Alcohol and some compressed nitrogen cleaned mine up. All I did was to slosh around and they cleaned up like new. If you don't have nitrogen, used some air in a can or something that doesn't have moisture and oil like most home compressors do.
Easy job...after disassembly, just put the housings into hot soapy dishwater. Swirl around for awhile and rinse with clear water. The dealer told me it was the grease from the bulb socket that breaks down over time from the heat of the bulb. I swished alcohol around 3-4 times and its gone. Let them air dry in front of a fan.

Some guys mention the crushed ice, I doubt it has any real efficacy..its really just the solvent doing its job. The reason you use ice cubes to clean coffee urns is because you throw salt in there, too....the salt abrades the scuzz, the swirling ice delivers the scrubbing power.
