I was having the bang also. Finally no more bang just my starter whirring without engaging. Replaced the starter with a 1.4 kw starter and no more banging. I have put this out there before and now I will again. I think a lot of people are changing the compensator for what I believe is a starter clutch problem. It's easier to replace the starter clutch, and much less expensive too. Compression releases is the best solution to the problem and will be my next project.

yes...a more powerful starter can push past the compression build up in a piston at TDC during starting....def
the reason why the compensator appears to provide release is beucase the spring action stores the energy of a kick back as horizontal motion and re-releses it as rotational energy in the direction of crank......like a wind up toy
