Makes me happy with my HD stage 1 recalibration for correct VE and XiEDs for the enrichment of the closed loop. Great combo with no issues with my heavy breather and V&H 2/1 Propipe. No fuss nor tuning. Runs great in Florida heat.
It sounds like all the pinging is coming from bikes that have done atleast a stage 1. Has anyone heard of a pinging problem with a stock set up. I was thinking of doing a stage one but may just keep it stock and replace only the mufflers with monster ovals.
Not exactly, mine started it with just slipon pipes. What Ive concluded is when theres a degree of carbon buildup in the combustion chamber then it will begin to ping. It varies but by 6 k theres enough of a buildup and your off. Some bikes start off right away like 2black1s which is peculiar, but the people I talk to have it develop after the 5-6 k threshold. Im a proactive individual and dont like to be dependant on someone else to solve my problems so I took matters ( timing adjustment) into my own hands. Like 2black said its pretty easy and if you have the PV I understand its real easy. It varies but you start by taking away ( retarding or drop the timing digit down into the -#) . The map Jamie sent me had a lot of positive #s making my pinging worse. So, I went in the opposite direction dropping the # down 1 degree at a time till the ping is gone from that rpm range. Do it gradually and calculated making lots of notes so you can track how your doing and where youve been.

If you dont start developing a ping at the 5-6k mi on the clock then you might not.....but with the heat many are developing it somewhere around that mileage.
Most the time when I talk to guys complaining of their bike pinging, it comes down to they should be dropping a gear rather then trying to push it in 6th gear.
This is when I noticed my pinging as well - I'm on the freeway lugging 6th and instead of downshifting, I roll on the throttle. I heard the noise, but didn't know what it was until now. I'll pay more attention now and see if my fuel really affects it. I run the cheap stuff if the station I'm at is ridiculously expensive, but I usually try to run premium.
(Yes, I know its a matter of $1 per tank, its a principle thing - I won't pay $4 per gallon no matter what)

A little pass 7k miles now. No problems whatsoever.
Well they have these poor things so choked down & leaned out.
Today's gasoline is crap. More here in Calif than elsewhere.
No wonder they ping and rattle and put off more heat than a
volcano.
1st thing, in my humble opinion. The compression ratio is too high.
They need to drop it into the 9-1 or just below range. Yes, power loss.
Compensate by raising the cubes to 110.
2, Cat converters on a small displ (motorcycle) eng is a joke.
Take em off and hang them in the rafters until state mandated smog checks
come around. I dread the day THAT comes around. I am keeping my stock
exh/syst (w/the sh***y screamin eagle mufflers) for such an occasion.
