As a Kentucky boy who's been living in Florida for over 20 years my best advice would be just get off the super slabs. The scenery in Kentucky is beautiful from the rolling bluegrass hills to the mountainous regions in the eastern part of the state. All my family is east of Lexington. I spent just about every summer on Cave Run Lake growing up and have a lot of great memories there. Carter Caves is another really nice place. As mentioned the Bourbon Trail, Makers Mark Distillery are all really good stops too. I recommend checking out the parks. A lot of them have camping available, both primitive and cabins.

We did the Bourbon Trail as well hit Buffalo Trace distillery in Frankfort as it wasn't on the trail but is a fine tour. There is a neat little bar in Loretto called Hawks Place if still open, serve good food, nice people. In Frankfort you want to try the Dragon Pub at the bridge at Capital street, neat little joint with a river view. Mammoth Cave is down near to Bowling Green for a cool down on a hot day.

Thank You Everybody for all the great ideas. We will be going down from Iowa and we don't really have any plans on where we are going yet. This feedback is great, it will help us greatly.

Born and raised in Kentucky, now live in Ohio. I would love to move back home but work keeps me in Ohio.
There are so many places in Ky to see. It really just matters what part of Ky you are ging to. Heck, just a ride down most roads off the beating path are wonderful!!!!
Enjoy!!!!!

Hawks is still going strong or was back in the winter anyway. Cozy Corner is across the road too if you like rock music.

If you are in the southern part of the state, The Cyclemo Motorcycle Museum (in Red Boiling Springs, TN) is worth a visit.
Really nice people run the place and the Museum includes your looking around their renovation shop. Go on line and check it out - I was VERY surprised at how well done it is.
Great hilly rides in the surrounding areas...
Ride safe.

We rode to Kentucky last year from Oklahoma. Camped at Bardstown and did the boubon trail. Then we did the corvette museum and factory.
Really enjoyed the trip.
