The easiest way to avoid the 07' tranny problem is to buy an earlier 5 speed, find a nice low mileage 03-06 and you will save a few bucks.

My opinion is I like the RK is just has so much versatility.

1st,
On a trip like the one you are taking cruise control would be a big plus. I know you can put it on the Road King, but I'm not sure about the Heritage. It may not sound like a big deal, but I think anyone that has cruise will tell you it is worth it!

I've read a lot about the tranny noise (rattles/clatters) on this forum for the 07's and it does seem that it's more evident on the touring bikes or at least on those with lowers. And of course I just traded in my RKC for an Ultra... most of the 07s are ok... but there are a few that aren't. My bike comes in this week.. I'm hoping that by now most of the clinks are fixed... also, I'm getting the SE Air, SERT and my old SE2 pipes put on before I pick it up... I have confidence that the problems will be fixed (crossed fingers). But I couldn't give you a guarantee that if you purchase an RK it won't have the rattles... of course you could also have them with a Softtail. Now my experience with the RK (2003)... great! my wife really enjoyed the ride, I love the look of the Classic. I like the looks of the Softail and the Fatboy... but, based on others comments to me.. the Road King rides more comfortable for long trips. My wife also talked me into putting the tour pak on the RK... it was really great for packing, for shopping and for putting my computer case for work comuting. While you can't go wrong with either, if you want comfort.. go with the Road King AND a different seat... both have terrible stock seats... I replaced my with the Sundowner.... my wife loved it and that was very important... I like having her ride with me :-)

You asked a valid question about Heritage and a Road King. It is hard to beat all the Road King Classic has to offer. Ride them both. I would not own anything but a touring bike, but that is just me. I had a Road King and had no complaints. I was ready for an Ultra, and really wanted a cd player and radio. NowI have it and would not be without it.

Thanks for all of the constructive comments I got. Went back to the dealer today and took momma along with me. It turned out to be a good day to go - the 2 to 4 inches of ice we got was keeping most people home so I got to spend some time visiting with the saleman, getting some answers and trying bikes on for size. Anyway, talked to Mike at Route 66 and had momma get on a RK Classic and on an Ultra. First thing she said when she got on the Ultra was "This is really comfortable". That was all it took. I'll take one out for a ride when the weather gets better but we changed our order from the Heritage Classic to a Fire Red Pearl/Black Pearl Ultra. Mike was insistent on Harley standing behind their products and making sure things were taken care of. The Ultra, while not ideal for cruising around town, IS the ideal for the type of touring we want to do. The bike won't be in till April (about11weeks), which is a drag, but that's okay, I can deal with that. Planned our first long trip last night -- heading up through Missouri, Iowa (Decorah), Minnesota (Cass Lake/Bemidji) to Canada and then back through N. Dakota, S. Dakota (Sturgis), Wyoming (Devil's Tower), Nebraska, Kansas, and home to Tulsa. If anyone has any information on good rides along out route, I would appreciate any input. I'll put up a thread in the trip section as well... Again, thanks for all the input.

I bought an 06 road king and the tranny was whiney in 4th gear, at first. I don't get to ride as much as I'd like but after it it got 5 or6000 miles on it the tranny quietened down. It how has 9000 on it and it is qhiet ascan be. my brother bought 07 and his doesn't make much noise at all. he's tickled to death with his bike, like Iam mine.
