On my way home from visiting a friend, then stopped at a store. A bit more than 3 miles from home, while at a light I go to put the bike (Road King) in first and the shifter spline snapped off. Fortunately I did get it into gear and was just 3 miles and change from home. The kicker is it was replaced 2 years ago when it stripped out along with the front lever. Right now I am too pissed to even drive to a dealership and pick one up. Parts guy at the closest shop told me all sorts of stuff has been breaking lately and couldn't explain why. I told him I can. CHINA!!!!!!!
Well I'll be double dipped in doggie doo doo. Just talked to my riding partner and he has a brand new (never used) one. He said it is about 8 years old so hopefully before the Chinese invasion.... Sometimes you are the statue and other times you are the bird. Guess this time I am both....
Everyone needs to take theirs off the trans shaft and replace the bolt with a hex bolt:
locktite it while your at it......no more problems.
Thanks for the tip!!!! I had blue loctite on them but still butting my head against the wall as to how HD could produce such a crappy product. Guarantee you any future mods will be after market and not HD.
I was at the dealer yesterday talking to the guy who wrenches on my bike, he said they are having more recalls the last couple of years than ever.
I asked him what now, and he said there is a recall on BCMs, but I didn't ask on which bike, he was doing a recall on a fatboy while I was there, then he got real pissed when he found out that the parts department gave him a BCM with security the bike then threw a code about the alarm, and he then checked out the bcm it said security right on it. HE was not a happy camper.
It happened to me on my '01. I had just downshifted to pull in my driveway.... what a strange feeling ! I put a greasable cross shaft back in, not that that would have prevented it..
I replaced mine 3 yrs. ago with a grade 8 bolt and locktite. Have not had a problem since.
I would be most curious what the bolt looks like as compared to the spline and how you got that to work. Remember now that it was the spline that broke and not the bolt.
