The MOCO obviously designed the lowers with the forethought that not all riders would be removing them when the weather changes. The air flow for the engine is sufficient to provide air around the engine. The vents are for rider comfort and are designed to be opened and closed when needed. There are many bikes on the road in all parts of the country that have lowers that stay on for the life of the bike. An oil cooler is a nice addition if you choose to leave the lowers on in warm temperatures. They are great in the colder weather and in heavy rains as well.
I've got to tell you that buying lowers for my SG was one of the best things I've done. What a difference it's made in extending that riding window for me, not to mention I think they look great. When it gets warm enough for no coat I'll take them off (maybe), its only 3 bolts and no time at all.
Here is what I found with my '06 Ultra's adjustable fairings:
- Anything other than gloves in the boxes will rattle when you hit a bump
- The adjustable vents are for the rider's comfort. On a cool day, closing them keeps the rider warmer but does not seem to change the engine temp. It appears that HD designed them so that the engine will always get enought air flow.
- The rider, bike, and mostly the rear jug will be lots cooler in the hot months with the fairings off. Try holding your hand down beside the rear head while riding at highway speed - with the fairings on, and with them off - you can feel a significant difference in air flow and temp.
- The fairings are quite easy to remove/install
- I added a rubber washer to the inside, lower bolt because the metal bolt against bare plastic fairing was eating out the plastic
Bottom line: If it is cool enought that you need a jacket to be comfortable while riding -leavethe fairings on, when it is warm enought to be comfortable riding without a jacket - take them off.

In reference to the "added a rubber washer to the inside, lower bolt" I recommend using a"Sealing Washer" Their made of stainless steel and have a neoprene rubber washer of the same size,... bonded to it.
