Default CB problem listening

Just bought a '07 Ultra. CB works when transmitting. When listening as I ride many times I can't understand the conversation since it seems to be breaking up. I know the person is talking right along but my end doesn't get the whole conversation. Other times when they are real close I have no problem. I know the squelch is used for interference, but why is it I can hear them talking but they keep breaking up? Any ideas??

These radio's only have about a 2 mile range... even then it is broken up. I would say no more than a mile, in my experience, and you should be able to hear everything just fine.

The first thing to do is adjust your squelch right at the threshold of the noise. That is, turn it down until you hear noise, then bump it up a notch or two, but no more. See if that helps. You may find that you have to bump it up a little more to keep out distant signals yet still allow your reception of riding buddies.

Also, since your bike has a little age on it now, ensure that all connections and grounds associated with the CB antenna coax and antenna are good and tight. Make sure that the antenna is screwed tightly on the stud, and that inside the tourpak the connections are tight. When under the faring, check to see that the connector on the back of the cb unit is tight. Make sure that the coax is not pinched anywhere between the cb and the antenna. Ensure there is no moisture in the junctions.

Apart from all of that, your unit should work just fine unless it has a receive sensitivity issue inside the unit that is not user serviceable.

Edit....Forgot to mention that if you are using a stubby or shortened antenna, anything other than stock, then you can expect your cb performance to be really marginal. Small antennas for a transmit and receive situation is never optimal. Bigger is better as far as antenna efficiency, thus better distance and performance.
