I just ordered HD Aux LED's to go with my headlight on my Road King cop bike and judging by the comments and picks, I'm soooo glad I did. I put my money into lighting that I know looks good and works and have stayed away from the slippery slope that is performance ehancement.
As far as I know nothing lights up the night better then the spot light on the Tank we had back
in Vietnam in 1966, unless it was a flare fired from a Destroyer off shore.
i have the phase 7 in my street glide with the custom dynamics rings. I agree the phase 7 doesn't light up very well from the side view (no picture). I'd say the stock setup is better from the side view. That's part of the reason why i got the custom dynamic rings. They are VERY visible from up front and the side. So now i have better light output and more visibility.
I can't say anything about the HID's. (never had them)
I ride home from work in the country back roads most night about 2 a.m. A couple weeks ago I put in the phase 7 lights and all I can say is WOW! can't believe that I waited so long. I feel much safer riding home now than I did with the stock lights. Not the best looking headlights when the bike is parked but they work great.
I put the Harley LED on my bike to replace the retrofit HID that was on there. Biggest difference is the beam dispersal pattern is much more sharply defined with the LED. It puts a lot of light where I need it, but since it is such a tight focus, it doesn't light up the sides of the road like the HID does. Makes it harder to see critters and such on the side of the road. I have a set of Kuryakyn bullet halogen auxiliary lights that are converted over to HID's, so I use them on the back roads. That combination is unbeatable! No more outdriving my headlight, and there is enough light in my peripheral vision to see clearly, and still not blind oncoming traffic!
