Just posted hellos to everyone in the new member section. I have a 1988 FLHTC that has been totally restored. Last year we took a trip out west and had a blast, rode a total of 25 days and 9000 miles. Got ready to ride to the Brickyard 400 on Friday and burned up the battery. This is the second time around for the ignition switch to fail, causing a battery to smoke and fry. This switch lasted 7 years, with many miles but the switch has been obsolete from HD for years and the last one came from Bill's in Bloomburg, PA. He has no more, and 3 days on the www have proved wastefull in finding even a used one. Any one have any thoughts on a different setup, or a newer style that can be made to fit into the 1988 inner fairing?
Been there, mine is unique to 85-88 only In 89 they made the change to to frame an put a bolt that comes out of the bottom that makes that style hit my 88 neck even if I cut the bolt off. Wonder if the 2000 and up is made the same way?
been to J and P, i'm a gold club member, bought many parts for the restoration the last 5 years. They do not sell fairing mounted switches. Thanks for the suggestion though mtgriz
2000 will not work. You could order it from a HD dealer who who has to order it from Vintage Motorcycle Parts....only dealers can go through them...I'll try and get you a phone number and some more info. May take a day or two. I am going out of town.
You need part # 71-526-82A...the whole assembly or 71-526-80 just the electric part..Nothing in the State of Florida we did s check.
Been there too, my understanding is vintage has not had one for years. I Have my dealer working on other solutions, but no help thus far. I even spent 2 hours with Harley on there 800 tech support line this AM and they said no dealer had it for years. Now he did not say vintage, but it sounded like he ment that as well. But I am entertaining any and all ideas. So feel free to send the phone # and info you find out. Thanks jerr1834 for your time.
At this point Im looking for new ideas how to run something other than stock. A new starter switch with another switch for lights, who knows but I'm interested in all ideas. And yes if I do come across one in a swap meet, I will buy it in a heart beat.
There is a place called V-twin motorcycle parts in Newburgh/Vailsgate New York but they only work with a dealers. I don't have a # off hand but you could google them. Lots of old stuff.
