Default Machinist Help?

looking for help with machining an axle to fit my bike? I need my front axle turned down from 1" to 3/4" to fit an older style wheel with Timken bearings onto my 00 Glide.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Might be easier to buy the smaller diameter axle and machine new spacers.

located in mass on the rhode island line. i was thinking about buying an older style 3/4" axle from a touring bike, but the right lower fork leg axle hole diameter is smaller than the 1-1/8" diamter off my fork leg. not sure i can get a spacer to fit in the lower leg (safely). i ordered new 3/4" axle spacers already to center the wheel.

I attempted to modify one of the 25mm axles (a different project I was brain storming on) and since the axle was hollow it would not work for what I wanted to do. Is the 1" axle rifle bored (hollow)? If it is, it will become too weak for use if you turn it down to 3/4". If the axle is solid, it could be done as long as you do not introduce any stress risers that will generate cracks later.

The factory axle i have that i am hoping to have turned down, is 1" solid steel. the research i have done to date looks like the 99 and previous baggers had a 3/4" axle, same length, etc. although the ends in which fit in the older forks is a smaller diameter than my style forks, so that isn't really an option.

Older style fork legs might be easier way to go

Is it hardened or can a file cut it? Don't know if a axle is hardened or machinable.
Just checking.

It's probly just a low carbon steel.

if its a cast wheel you can open up the center of the wheel by machining part of the center out and use a 1 inch bearing and spacer, the outside diameter is the same as a 3/4 inch bearing.i have an older sportster cast lightningstar wheel on the rear of my 2006 ultra.if you want, you can pm me,i will give you my phone number.i might can explain it better.
