My buddy had his compesator go out on his bike, do any of you guys know if Harley has supperceeded the old design with the new one that comes in the new bikes?
He doesn't want to old design one back but doesn't have the money to upgrade to the S/E one.
I believe I have heard that the new bikes come with the SE comp. Haven't had my cover off to see personally though.
If he still has the old style on the 96"... spend the money and up grade it to the SE. I could tell a world of difference when I changed it out on my old bike.

I am still not convinced the SE comp isn't without issues as well. I have 50k on my stock comp with no problems whatsoever. I had the primary off for a stator/rotor replacement and the stock comp looked fine so I reinstalled it. There are several threads on here with a bunch of people who switched to the SE comp and had failures. I have no idea why they failed though: design flaw, inappropriate oil, etc. I am sticking with the stock compensator until someone can convince me the switch is actually necessary.
Having said all that, I ride pretty mellow and my bike is a stage 1 96 inch with no other mods. The newer bikes are larger displacement so maybe that''s why they have the SE comp as a stock item.
For my situation...
I replaced the one on the 07 SG that I had because I had the bike about 500 miiles before the dealer could do the 103/255s kit. Soon after I started having the starter clunk-bang kick out problem.. then I got to noticing that when I would let off and roll back on the throttle there was a definite " whole lot of slack being taken up" type bump in the drivetrain. It finally got to where after the first cranking of the day, you had to crank it like an old carb bike, give it a touch of gas and hit the button.. sometimes that worked.. sometimes you got the bang clank starter kick out crap. Finally I decided to swap to the SE comp. Never had the starter bang and kick out again... never got the huge amount of slack being taken up bump from the drivetrain again.....
I'm sure they have some sort of issue with the SE also.. I've seen some threads on here with the fretting problems and such.. I think alot of the ones that had that problem figured out they were running the wrong fluid in the primary (can't remember for sure though) .... but at least the bike cranked and rode better than it did.... and now even the MOCO decided that it was time to swap to the SE one.....
There again.. these are just the observations of my situation...
