I'm currently riding with my car's Garmin 255w GPS, and have been quite pleased with it so far. As I use this unit more and more with the motorcycle, I find myself wishing that I had a unit that allowed Route Planning. One great thing about the 255w is that it runs and charges just fine being plugged into a USB adapter in the cigarette lighter. I don't want a unit that requires hard wiring or the use of a traditional "car" cigarette lighter adapter. The USB adapter fits flush with the cigarette lighter face, so there's no chance of it hitting the fuel tank when the steering is turned to the lock.
So, here's my question. Does Garmin have a unit that has all of the following features?
1.) Can be operated/charged with a USB cord
2.) Supports route planning
3.) Has the "Lane Assist" function
Look at the 24xx and the 25xx series. 2450 has all those features
Thanks. My main concern was having the unit operate off a simple USB cord. The Route Planning and Lane Assist feature I can get off one of the Garmin comparison charts. They just never tell you what type of cord they come with. I guess a lot of them come with some type of FM receiver for traffic info too. I also read on someone else's post in the forum that they found that their GPS wouldn't charge when plugged unto a USB port. That meant that throughout the riding day their battery on the GPS got weaker and weaker, to the point it would shut down. My 255w will run for 12 hours plus, and have a full charge at the end of the day.
I can't use the regular cigarette lighter cord they come with because the plug is too long and will hit the tank.
The 1450 supports custom routes, and has lane assist.
Note: Be aware there is a difference between a USP data cord and a USB Power Cord
See the details in my post above.
Thanks. I have the exact same USB adapter you use, and I'm using the RAM handlebar mount. My 255w actually runs with a regular USB cable, but it's good to know I can get whatever unit I want. If it won't work with a USB cable, I know where to get a USP cable.
