12 SG, with VH twin slash slip ons...I'm getting 33.6 mpg
Thinking of getting VH power duals and a heavy breather if I can ever get any money together....will that help? If so, by how much you think?
Any other tips/tricks? I don't have a tuner or power commander or anything like that. I do get on it a bit on the open road but nothing to outrageous. I know that can affect mpg.
As always, thanks!
Hummm that's kinda low. I have to be on it really hard to get it that low. The lowest I've gotten even before I got my PCV is 35 and I was blowing fire out my tailpipes . Let's see what the pro's have to say...........
To improve your mpg IMHO a tuner is essential. A consequence of the emissions settings stock bikes have to meet is that while the exhaust is not so dirty, the fuel economy is not so good! So get your bike tuned to good ole fashioned air/fuel ratios and you should cure the heat problem, also improve performance and mpg.
I have an '11 Limited and around town I get 34-35 if I'm lucky, BUT I just got back from a 1000 trip (constant speed) and my lowest was 45 mpg and highest was 51. V&H power duals, Fuel Moto breather, Fatshotz, and SE Race Tuner. I'm a happy guy!
If you get the new exhaust and heavy breather you'll have to get a tuner any way. Might as well get it first. Get one that doesn't require a dyno to tune it. Something like the power commander or power vision.
Yes, you must have a heavy wrist. I wouldn't think a newer '12 with slip ons would get that kind of mileage. I always thought stock bikes get the best mpgs as they are leaned out so much. Adding slip ons shouldn't change much. I added the dual headers, slip ons and heavy breather and the mpgs went down some, but that is because of the increased fuel added by the tuner. If you want sound and performance, mpgs suffer sometimes unless you have really good back flow with your setup.
If the bike is tuned properly, and the exhaust is not so open that it is slows down exhaust gas velocity, you will have MORE power than stock and better MPG than stock.
This is because, even though you are running a richer AFR than the stock lean map, the engine is operating more efficiently, delivering more power with less twisting of the wrist.
