So, boys weigh in on this one. The only non-ethanol gas around here is 89 octane. That better than 93 ethanol gas? (always use 93, but the ethanol seems to gunk up carbs, etc.).
Ethanol does not gum up carbs, it actually cleans them. Problem is, most older carbs have parts that don't like alcohol.
If your motor pings on the low octane stuff, run it. If it pings you have no choice.
I'm surprised you can find any "straight gas" around Montgomery... I haven't found anything but the blended stuff around B'ham area.... I read somewhere (forgot where) that the epa is wanting to push a 15% mix instead of a 10%
I will take non-ethanol any day over ethanol even if the ethanol has higher octane. I am sure that there are some people that love ethanol but I have not seen anything but problems since the government has forces us to use the stuff.
There has been millions in damages from ethanol just in the boating industry. From fuel tanks and lines that the ethanol breaks down.
I saw more than a 10% lose in mpg when switched over to ethanol.
This doesn't even take into account of the corn that is being taking away from being used as food or feed that increases the cost our food.
When they were first taking about going to ethanol I kept hearing that it was going to be cheaper for the price of gas keeps going and since mpg's are down we are jsut using more.
Try doing a search here. It lists ethanol free stations. If you find a new one, or one is no longer selling ethanol free gas please let them know. http://pure-gas.org/
Most marinas will have ethanol free gas at a minimum of 91 octane, but you will pay for it. Thanks we only have 5-6 gallon tanks.

In Virginia the stations that are E free are on the eastern costal area, the western part of the state or marinas, I was told all the stations in the 95 area and cities have to use E gas. When I race I take a jug and fill it with racing fuel and mix a little everyweek, I don't do it for performance or power, hi octane won't do anything for our bikes with low compression, you really should run the lowest octane you can without getting pinging, hi octane gas burns slower to prevent pinging in hi compression engines.
