Installed new pipes was told did not need a tuner. Took the bike in for a starting problem was told they installed a couple of update should help. Dealer mention the bike was running hot at both cylinders especially the front and suggested a tuner.
Just curious if some bikes do not need a tuner. I wanted tokeep the bike stock except for removing the stock exhaust to remove the cat. I guess if I need to have a tuner installeded I should start the mods.
I am sure someone with more knowledge than me will chime in but I have heard/read that some pipes and/or slip ons, because they result in more air being pulled through, will lean your bike out more than stock (even without replacing cleaner) causing it to run hotter. Not sure about how that might affect starting and again, I am only repeating what I have heard, this info may be wrong but is worth checking out perhaps.
If all you added was slip-ons you don't need a tuner but if you removed the cat I would suggest getting one just because it will run better.
In fact a tuner will help a completely stock bike run better.

Regarding heat and discoloration you'll need a tuner. Though a slip on won't/shouldn't impact the bike's starting ability.
CFR's slip ons (and probably others but all I know about is CFR's) do cause the bike to run hotter/leaner for the reasons Trial Dog mentioned and need to be tuned in order to not discolor their pipes due to high(er) heat.
I am specifically talking about the change on HD 103s.
You don't need a tuner, but you'd be well advised to go with the complete Stage 1 - the pipes you have already, a higher-flowing air cleaner (HD's Screaming Eagle one will do fine) and a tuner.
The tuner can (and should be) used to richen the fuel/air ratio which will bring down the heat generated by the engine a bit. Your engine will thank you.
