Riding home yesterday...bike running great. Stopped and filled up, 5 miles later the bike coughs...backfires...speedo starts going crazy...engine light comes on....2 seconds later..bike runs fine.
2 miles down the road I stop for a redlight...the bike dies. no power nothing.
When I turn the ignition on....no power,nothing.
When I turn it back to accessory....the speedo lights up and shows the mileage?
I checked all the obvious wiring, fuses, connections....all look ok.
Not s mechanic here by any means, but i feel your pain since something similar happened to me recently. Loose or broken ECM wire? Thats what happened to me, plus my main rrlay was fried. The speedo sweeping points to electrical. Did you check the codes and the battery voltage?
Tried to get codes...pushed in the odometer button...it lit up...turned on the ignition, nothing.
Turn the ignition to accessory and it lights up??
Fuses good...checked the main 40a...looks good. Checked the ignition, nothing looks burnt or broken....I didnt check it with a meter yet. Un plugged and re-plugged all visible connectors.
I will try replacing the starter relay tommorow and see what happens.
I didn't fix mine myself- like I said before I'm no mechanic... But on my '08 the ECM is under the seat on top of the battery. It needs to be taken off and held aside to install the battery, so I always try to be gentle so as not to break or strain those wires. There are relays under there, too- towards the back fender. You may want to post in the electrical "help" forum with this question also. I wish I could be more help but these things are complicated these days.
I don't believe that the ECM is on top of the battery. That is probably a tuner. the ECM should be under the right side cove. I think that the relay is under the fairing. Recheck the fuses with a DVM. Sometimes they will look good, and be bad. May also be the ignition switch.
