Howdy folks. I've posted a bit about this before but I spoke with the mechanic at the dealer last night and wanted to share the information and get thoughts. I've been getting ping while on the throttle between 2700 and 2900 RPMS. The bike is a completely stock with a 103CI and it has 6300ish miles on it now. I've had the ping for the last 800 - 900 miles. At first I thought it was bad gas but I've ran 4 or 5 tanks through it now. All 91 or better octane with NO ethenol. At first the mechanic said they spoke with Harley and was told this is NORMAL. I call BS. I've always been under the impression that PING, in any form, is not good. So, I kept on him about it. Finally he said they would hook it up to the computer and see if there's any updates for the ECM and possibly re-flash it.
Does anyone else have any ideas for a stock configuration and the development of PING?
Hate to say but the easiest way to get rid of it will probably be to run a tuner (power commander, power vision, etc.). Then the ping can be tuned out.

Mine pinged like crazy in the same rpm range as the OP. 75 mph was downright scary. The pinging sounded like the top end was going to fly apart.
Got a Power Vision, and the guys at Dynajet are helping me eliminate the pinging. Getting really close to a good tune. I don't really want to permanently mount the PV..... but I sure wish the data port was a little easier to get to.
My dealer could do nothing for me.

Thanks for the input.
Yup that's the mileage and RPM mine started. Carbon starts to build around that mileage cuasing the ping when it gets hot out. I ended up putting a PCV on it so I could retard the timing which is the only way to successfully stopping it...copy of timing map below:
I don't mean to be dumb but, I can put a PCV on my bike with stock intake and exhaust?? I thought I had to do everything. Forgive me - this is only my first HD and I'm still learning it's intricacies.

Yes you can. Mine is stock, and I have a Power Vision...... and as an added benefit my speedometer is now calibrated dead on with my GPS.

I had the exact same issue with mine. Same rpm range. My only mod was V&H slip-ons. Added a Power Commander V and while I was at it, a Cobra Powrflo AC and the problem is gone. Plus, a very noticable power gain.
Yes I only have a mild stage 1 and the tuner can be configured to any mod. Its controlling my timing and adding fuel in certain ranges is why I put one on.....my timing map works real well but I also added one more behavior change with the way I shift. I do not use 6th gear unless I run 75+ for extended periods. If Im passing and running up even as high as 80-85 I dont bother and there's no RPM complaints or rev limiter involvement. This helps with carbon buildup and believe it or not I get better gas mileage....I know right!
if you only plan on doing a stage 1 (pipes, header, air cleaner) save yourself some $$ and get a set of FL-10-Vied's at www.nightrider.com. Easy no hassle. Love em on my 12 ultra.
