Default Diamondback Clutch Cable

Well I tried to do a search on this? Perhaps an old hat topic but here goes and accept apologies as warranted.

Got a 2012 Road King and went to the H.D. Fat Ape Handlebar set up with riser. Changed out everything as required to include the clutch cable. I went with the 'diamondback clutch cable' #38926-09 and did the adjustment per the service manual...all of it.

Problem is it seems to be bunching up and eating the hell out of the braid that surrounds all other internal materials and still a lot of slack in this clutch cable.

Any comment(s) or suggestions welcome other than it's a piece of junk from H.D. as I've figured that out...(seriously wondering what's going on with them)? Perhaps operator error...naaaah (lol).

I've taken the liberty to attach a picture which I hope comes across OK for viewing. This is 'similar' to what this diamondback cable is doing as shown below:

I have Diamondback cables and do not have that problem. Sounds like a defective cable with the braided sheathing too long for the cable. Can't tell from the photo if you might have done something wrong but these cables are not "junk from HD". Pretty sure they are Magnum Chromite II.

TXFXSTRIDER... Well I'm not sure...? Either operator error on my part which may be the case during adjustment or indeed I got a bad one? Seems like it started 'Binding Up' within a few turn of the adjuster.

Just wondered or wondering if others may of have had a similar miss hap/problem with the Diamondback clutch cables. Only recourse is to replace...can't have this on a new ride looking and working badly as I have now. It may be the only option I have? Seems to be w a y to much stretch, slack or something...just keeps eating up the the stainless braid and black cover?

Again, this particular clutch cable number is called out in a 2012 FLHR Road King dealer install options work sheet within the 'Handle Bar' section. I got 15% off on parts as part of my purchase from them and I like the set up...fits me perfect. Thanks!

Well....H E double L ! I managed to locate the the LE Clutch Cable Instruction Sheet. It appears as "Operator Error"...Yes that's right "Operator Error".

Clutch cable Adjustment says, "Both the clutch side and free play must be adjusted when installing this kit". (dammit)

Item #3 - While adjusting the freeplay in the clutch cable, hold the "CLUTCH lever side" of the adjuster with one wrench while using the outer wrench to rotate the "Transmission End" of the adjuster.

NOTE: Twisting the clutch level side of the adjuster could result in damage to the outer jacket of the clutch cable.

For give me oh great H.D. gods...for I have fargged up. I have worked to much on my 2002 Electra Glide Standard and things are 'just not the same". Or, especially when you can actually put 'decent custom parts' on your ride.

OK...feel free to kill this thread...sorry about wasting all these electrons and others time. Looks like I will be getting a new cable...and following all directions. Meanwhile, I'll go hide...thanks!

Well at least you found the problem and can move on. That's good.

Hate to think about how many "operator errors" I have been involved in.

Operator Error indeed. All fixed now as of yesterday. One costly mistake. Everything is looking good and adjusted out just fine with no binding as shown or described.

Memo to self: A service manual is always needed but...Always read the instructions prior when adding new accessories...and if you don't have them...find them if possible (geez)! Thanks all who chimed in...ride hard...ride smart...All!

Don't sweat it.....I try like hell not to but occasionally I frack something up......most of the time it was on Metric bikes while polishing my skills so I could be worthy of working on a beautiful machine like these bikes......... Probably why Im on this forum so much also, I like to know everything I can before I take on any project or maintenance.
